The Salvation Army's Transitional Housing Program is for homeless single parent families, male or female 18 years or older. The parent must be low-income and have proof of homeless status at the time of admission. The program can house 16 families for up to two years in single-family units. In order to remain in the program, each client has to be involved in 30 hours of work or school or a combination of both. Clients meet with case managers at least once a week. Each client receives assistance in developing individual goals. If needed, clients also receive 6 months of management follow-up after they leave the program. Clients are required to pay 30% of their income toward program fees which encourages self-sufficiency. Residents are also required to attend town hall meetings as well as attend counseling services from an outside agency if needed. Some clients are victims of domestic violence, past substance abusers or have had involvement with child protective services.  Clients are also required to pass weekly apartment inspections. The Salvation Army Transitional Housing Program encourages their clients to seek and maintain employment. When available, the center offers computer and on-site GED classes. Another goal achieved is increasing the length of stay of their clients. Theylearned the longer the client lives in transitional housing, the better chance that client has of maintaining permanent housing after they leave. The average stay for clients is six to eight months compared to three to six months.
